Societal change needs a kick up the behind! Rachael Clamp, Founder & Director at Ardesey Ltd & IHAV Board Member

How did you make the transition from a mid to senior level position?

I’m not going to lie; it wasn’t easy. And it was exhausting at times. I had to do something that women often do – take on extra projects and responsibilities to gain experience (and prove myself). That’s exactly how I started in public affairs. It wasn’t part of my role officially but I saw the value it could bring the organisation I was working for but I really wanted to do it. I also have had a somewhat zigzag career, taking side steps to learn a new sector or specialism that have all helped me be what I am today. I could have stayed on one career path and have earned a lot more money, but I would not be enjoying what I do.

What do you love about your role?

Where to begin! We work with brilliant clients to who understand the value and impact we bring to their organisations, and that is the dream. All of our clients are purpose driven and so we are contributing in our own way to their societal impacts.

I’d be hiding something if I didn’t add that I love meeting people and talking about cool and crunchy stuff! I’m a personable individual and I love to chat and get to know a person and make them what to know about what I want to tell them. It’s a slow burn for outcomes, but that’s what we do.

How do you balance work and life?

Very badly! I love what I do and so it can be difficult to switch off. It’s certainly more of a vocation for me. Since my secondary breast care diagnosis I have to listen to my body more and monitor my energy levels. Again, I am fairly rubbish at this, but I am trying…I promise!

How do you continue to invest in your professional and personal development?

I am about to complete my 11th consecutive CPD cycle at the CIPR. The variety of activities that are included – mentoring, volunteering, speaking, training, reading, etc – means it’s never dull and develops with a career.

How are you using your position / voice to #AccelerateAction towards gender equality?

This year we’ve been talking to clients about thinking outside of their organisations and consider what they are really doing to accelerate action and throughout the year not just on 8th March. We’re challenging them to not just have a female speaker at their IWD lunch, but to consider putting in place a sort of charter of actions – such as never taking part in a single sex panel, refusing to accept a single sex shortlist when filling a post, never sending a single sex team to an event/pitch/meeting (unless in unavoidable circumstances) – and telling their wider ecosystem about it. It’s time to be bolder. Societal change needs a kick up the behind!
